Tuesday was the start of week 19! I cannot believe we’ve made it and I’m so thoroughly happy to have come this far. I will try to catch you up on all the action.
Last time I blogged it was about the extreme nausea I was experiencing from about week 6 to week 13 or so. After week 13, I attended the Sutter Cancer Infusion Center for daily hydration and zofran (anti-nausea) infusions which resulted in a 6 pound gain. After that week of daily visits, I was prescribed oral melt-on-your-tongue zofran to take as needed or every 8 hours and discontinued daily infusion visits. Not only did the medication help curb the nausea but it also helped with my non-existent appetite. Now that I’m at 19 weeks, I feel as if I’ve overcome the major nausea (sure, I still get sick about once a week or so) and that part of this pregnancy is significantly better.
Also at 13 weeks, I woke up at 2am bleeding heavily. I am used to some bleeding since I’ve spotted since about 6 weeks but typically the color was darker. The doctors say dark blood equals old blood so that is ok. It’s the red blood we have to be careful and cautious of. Well, the 13 week episode was complete with red blood, clots and cramps. The next morning we met our OB at his office for an ultrasound which showed the babies were still doing great – we were relieved!
Since then I’ve continued to spot here and there. At 16 weeks, we had our first appointment with the perinatologist. While the babies were right on track and weighing a healthy 5 ounces each, the sonogram showed the root cause of the bleeding – I have a clot in my uterus and my body is trying to expel the clot. The clot is a scary thing since it can grow and eventually cut off the placental flow to the babies. The perinatologist said studies have shown that increasing daily intakes of Vitamin C and Folic Acid have shown to help. We’ve adopted this advice and I’ve only spotted a few days for the past few weeks which is a great improvement.
At 17 weeks, we returned back to the OB where my doctor performed another ultrasound and it was great to see the babies moving and hear healthy heartbeats. Ed recorded the visit and posted to you-tube (links to come).
Today we will return back to our OB before heading back to the perinatologist next week for our check in.
I cannot believe how quickly this time has gone by and so thankful for the love and support received by our wonderful family and friends.
